Whether you’re a first-time waxee or you come to Bella like clockwork to have your hair removed, you probably know the risks associated with waxing. Although almost everyone experiences some tenderness or redness at the waxing site, serious problems, such as rashes, bruising, and ingrown hairs, are uncommon. But when these occur, they can be painful and embarrassing.

Happily, you can do a number of things pre- and post-waxing to minimize complications as well as reduce pain and discomfort during and after your appointment.

How you treat your skin before your waxing session can make a big difference in your level of discomfort and risk of infection. Before your next appointment, try these tips.

  • Make sure you have adequate growth. Don’t let your hair grow too long between appointments. Longer hair prevents the wax from adhering and makes the waxing more painful. You should have 1/8-inch of hair for the wax to hold onto—between two and three weeks’ worth of growth.
  • Discontinue certain medications. Some medications can make your skin more sensitive to injury from waxing. Stop using retinol-based products for two weeks ahead of your appointment, and if you take Accutane, discontinue using it for at least a month before you wax. Go two days without products containing alpha-hydroxyl or glycolic acid before a facial wax. Be aware that antihistamines, cortisone, and some antibiotics and thyroid medications can also increase your sensitivity to waxing.
  • Exfoliate. A day or two before your appointment, gently exfoliate the area that will be waxed to help the wax adhere to your hair and not your skin. Exfoliating the day of your appointment can leave your skin more sensitive to pain, so treat your skin very gently the day of.
  • Moisturize. In the days leading up to your appointment, moisturize well to help the wax release more easily. But don’t moisturize on the day of your appointment, since moisturizer on the hair can weaken the wax’s grip.
  • Inspect. The day of your appointment, inspect the area to be waxed. If you notice any inflammation, rashes, or broken skin, cancel your appointment and let it heal before you wax.
  • Stay Out of the Sun. It’s best to keep the waxing area out of the sun for the 24 hours leading up to your appointment. If you must expose it to sunlight, wear a good sunscreen.
  • Medicate. If you’ve found that you’re rather sensitive to waxing and experience a lot of pain and redness post-wax, consider taking an anti-inflammatory pain reliever like ibuprofen a half hour before you appointment.

Taking good care of yourself after your waxing session is just as important as preparing for it, since freshly waxed skin is more susceptible to bacteria and infection. Take the following precautions after your appointment to promote healing and minimize irritation until the area heals completely.

Post-Waxing Do’s:

  • Do apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation and calm your skin.
  • Do wear light, loose clothing that won’t rub against the waxed area.
  • Do take warm—not hot—baths and showers.
  • Do use Bella’s own solar-infused lavender oil to reduce pain and inflammation and prevent infection. For more sensitive skin, we recommend Yonka Emulsion Pure, made with essential oils to soothe, purify, and regenerate.

Post-Waxing Don’ts

  • Don’t visit the tanning salon.
  • Don’t be tempted by the jacuzzi or steam room.
  • Don’t touch your freshly waxed skin.
  • Don’t use bar soap, which can leave a film on your skin and cause ingrown hairs.

Special Precautions for a Bikini Wax

  • Your ultra-sensitive parts may require a little extra post-wax TLC:

For the First 48 Hours:

  • Stay out of the tub completely. Warm (not hot!) showers are okay.
  • Avoid sexual activity that might inflame the skin.
  • Don’t use any products containing harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, or dyes.
  • Apply a gentle moisturizer to soothe and hydrate.
  • Wear loose cotton underpants.

After 48 hours:

  • Gently exfoliate regularly to prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Carefully tweeze out or exfoliate away any in-grown hairs.
